Jose had been homeless and unemployed for years. He ate dinner regularly at Paz de Cristo.
Then Jose heard about Paz de Cristo’s job program. It is a free service that offers personal career coaching along with practical, one-on-one assistance searching for job openings, writing resumes and preparing for interviews. Computers with online access and printers are available in the Job Center.
Jose worked with Paz de Cristo’s staff and volunteers to build a new resume. He researched job openings online to find career opportunities that matched his knowledge, skills and abilities. Jose was referred to a local golf course and was hired as a full-time Grounds Keeper.
With a steady job, regular income and benefits, the next thing on Jose’s bucket list was a home of his own. Paz de Cristo stepped in to help. Having recently received a grant for housing, Paz bought a used trailer for Jose and covered the security deposit as well as the first month’s rent for a lot in a mobile home park.
Now Jose had an affordable home all his own.
“This has changed my life,” shared Jose. He quickly settled into a routine of waking up early each morning and going to work where he was responsible for maintaining the grounds of the golf course. Jose returned home each evening after a full day of work and cooked dinner.
“To have my own home and make my own meals has been a dream come true,” he said. “Paz de Cristo has helped me to get back on my feet and feel better about myself.”
Success for Jose has involved an inner journey that affected his relationships.
I’ve been able to face my children again. They are proud of me for being able to finally change my life around. I see them regularly and also get to spend more time with my grandchildren,” Jose explained.
“Without Paz de Cristo’s help I might still be out on the streets homeless and jobless,” he said. “Words cannot express my gratitude.”
